North Carolina Retailers Put Their Finger on a New Form of Payment
Charlotte Retailers Debut Biometric Payment Technology in 55 Stores
Herndon, VA — June 15, 2005
Thanks to 27 brands with more than 55 stores in the Carolinas, residents can now claim to have the fastest, most secure and convenient consumer payment option in the country. BioPay, the nation's leader in biometric transaction processing, today announces that 27 Charlotte area national and local retailers, including Lowes Foods, Maggie Moo's, Jersey Mikes and Dilworth's Coffee, are installing its "shop with your finger" technology. By adopting this technology, Charlotte's businesses continue to demonstrate their community's leadership in applied technology.
"As the first retailer in North Carolina to adopt biometric payment technology, we are providing our customers with the most secure payment method available and, at the same time, speeding up the checkout process for them," says Lowes Foods President Curtis Oldenkamp. "We take great pride in our fast checkout service and work hard to ensure that customers have minimal wait times at the register. We have been using the BioPay technology in one of our Hickory stores for the past few weeks, and are already seeing great results."
The BioPay system uses a person's unique finger image and their chosen BioPay number (usually a phone number) to authorize a secured debit direct from their checking account. The one-time enrollment can be completed at any merchant that offers the biometric payment service and the entire process takes less than two minutes. Once enrolled, the customer can purchase in seconds with their finger at any BioPay payment location across the United States. The BioPay service is free to the consumer.
"Our customers find BioPay intriguing as well as fast and more secure than other forms of payment. We chose BioPay because when our customers enroll at Dilworth's they get the convenience of being able to use BioPay at other retail locations across town or across the country," says Sandy May of Dilworth's Coffee, which has seven stores in Charlotte using the BioPay technology. "With BioPay payments, consumer convenience is up and retailer costs are down."
Many retailers across the country are choosing BioPay to give their check writing and credit/debit customers greater convenience when making a purchase. As a result, retailers are experiencing a dramatic reduction in payment processing costs.
Tim Robinson, President of BioPay, agrees, "Our goal is to provide the convenience of a secure, wallet-less world where a person can go out for a walk to buy a coffee or an ice cream without having to carry a heavy wallet or purse. We also believe that retailers pay too much in credit and debit card fees and BioPay solves that problem. With merchant pricing that starts at a nickel per transaction, BioPay is not only dramatically less expensive than Visa's typical two percent fee, but we effectively compete with the cost of processing a cash transaction."
