BI-LO Extends Agreement with BioPay, Creating the Nation's Largest Retail Implementation
of Biometric Identification Systems
BioPay's Paycheck Secure Will be Offered in 176 BI-LO Stores
Herndon, VA — November 10, 2003
Officials at BioPay, LLC today said BI-LO will be using BioPay's market-leading Paycheck
Secure biometric check cashing identification system in 176 supermarket locations
throughout the southeast. The multi-store deployment was a result of a successful 26-store
pilot program that began in June. By Thanksgiving, Paycheck Secure will be available at
BI-LO stores in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, creating the
nation's largest implementation of biometric identification systems within a single chain
of stores.
"BioPay has delivered on its promise to reduce BI-LO's losses to fraudulent checks,"
said James Wiles, BI-LO Loss Prevention Director. "Putting Paycheck Secure in other BI-LO
locations allows us to further this success and drive check fraud out of other stores."
"Expanding its relationship with BioPay demonstrates BI-LO's commitment to offering
superior customer service and its dedication to eliminating fraud," said Tim Robinson,
President, BioPay. "Together, BioPay and BI-LO are winning the battle against check
fraud."
About Paycheck Secure
Paycheck Secure uses biometric technology to electronically capture a customer's finger
image, store a template of the image, and then record check transactions associated with
that person. To date, more than 4.5 million check cashing transactions worth more than
$2 billion have been completed using Paycheck Secure. And, BioPay has created the nation's
largest commercial electronic biometric database.
When a customer cashes a check for the first time, the person gives the BI-LO clerk
his/her driver's license for inputting into the BioPay database. At the same time, the
customer's two index fingers are scanned and an electronic photo is taken of the customer.
All information is stored within BioPay's biometric database.
When a subsequent check is presented, the customer places their finger on the biometric
reader. Paycheck Secure then searches for a match, identifies the customer and delivers to
the BI-LO clerk a history of transactions associated with that person. If the person has
any negative transactions with any other BioPay merchant in the country, advanced alert
mechanisms warn the clerk, enabling the transaction to be declined before it is processed,
saving BI-LO money it may have otherwise lost. A customer with a history of positive
transactions allows BI-LO to cash the check with confidence.
