Cardenas Supermarkets Brings Biometric Check Cashing to Southern California
New Deal Broadens Paycheck Secure's Adoption by the Hispanic Community
Herndon, VA — November 11, 2002
Biometric identification leader BioPay, LLC announced that Cardenas Supermarkets has
adopted BioPay's Paycheck Secure to stop check cashing fraud
and drive revenue for its stores throughout southern California, including San
Bernardino, Riverside and eastern Los Angeles County. Paycheck
Secure is the nation's most popular biometric check cashing system and has been used to
process more than one million transactions totaling more than one-half billion
dollars.
"Getting rid of fraud is something Paycheck Secure has learned well," said Steve
Vallance, general manager, Cardenas Supermarkets. "The technology has been rolled out
to all our stores and will have a positive impact on our extensive check cashing
operations."
"BioPay merchants across the country have seen immediate results with Paycheck
Secure," said Tim Robinson, president, BioPay. "The investments these companies have
made are paying them back ten-fold from reaping great financial benefits from
reduced fraud losses to increased customer loyalty to streamlined processes."
Paycheck Secure is a voluntary system that uses biometrics to track a customer's
check cashing history. If the person is associated with any negative transactions,
advanced alert mechanisms warn the clerk, enabling the transaction to be declined
before it is processed saving the store money it may have otherwise lost. A customer
with a history of positive transactions allows the merchant to cash the check with
confidence.
The check cashing system lets affiliated stores share customer information in
real time. This allows store employees at every location to access a customer's
enrollment information and check transaction history with a finger scan. There is
no need for the customer to enroll at each location.
Cardenas Supermarkets serves predominately Hispanic
communities, with each store offering popular check cashing services. Many of their
customers are "unbanked" and use the chains' financial services as a means of cashing
payroll checks, paying bills and meeting other monetary needs.
